Godfrey was born on July 21, 1969, to a Nigerian couple in Lincoln, Nebraska. They belong to the Igbo tribe of Nigerian heritage. To escape the Nigerian Civil war, his family migrated to the USA. He is the nephew of Sonny Okosun, a famous renowned Nigerian musician.
Godfrey grew up in Chicago. He enrolled in Lane Technical College Preparatory High School. Later he acquired an academic scholarship to the University of Illinois, where he studied psychology.
