Godfrey was born on July 21, 1969, to a Nigerian couple in Lincoln, Nebraska. They belong to the Igbo tribe of Nigerian heritage. To escape the Nigerian Civil war, his family migrated to the USA. He is the nephew of Sonny Okosun, a famous renowned Nigerian musician.

Godfrey grew up in Chicago. He enrolled in Lane Technical College Preparatory High School. Later he acquired an academic scholarship to the University of Illinois, where he studied psychology. He formed the varsity football team at the university and performed with his new teammates at a traditional talent show. He stole the show, gained positive impressions from his coaches and teammates, and discovered his comedic talent.

He made his New York debut at Carolines on Broadway, and the Comic Strip Live and partnered with Williams Morris Talent agency. He frequently appeared on television, initially behind the cameras as a warm-up comedian for Soul Man and 'The Cosby Show'.
