Gao's father worked as a general manager in a French multinational tire manufacturing company Michelin Taiwan. Gao's mother was a Malaysian from George Town, the capital city of the Malaysian state, Penang. She won the beauty pageant in 1970. Godfrey Gao was the youngest of the three boys, and they all moved to North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

As an actor, he is popularly acclaimed for his main role in the Chinese television drama, 'Remembering Lichuan' and in the 2013 film for his role as Magnus Bane.

In 2004, Gao came back to Taiwan as a model in collaboration with JetStar Entertainment. Gao, Lan Chun-tien, Victor Chen, and Sphinx Ting were nicknamed Fashion 4. He was the first model from Asia for the luxury brand, Louis Vuitton. In 2006, he started acting in minor roles in television series in China.

His American debut as an actor was in the film 'The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones'. His captivating role in the 'Remembering Lichuan' earned him the nickname of 'nation's husband' in the Chinese media.

Taiwanese-Canadian model and actor Godfrey Gao fainted while filming a sports reality TV show in China, on November 27, 2019, at about 1:45 am. Gao was taken to a nearby hospital and was pronounced dead.

The show producers said that he fell and lost consciousness while participating in a team event and died at the hospital on November 27, 2019, in Ningbo, China. He was buried on December 15, 2019, at Chin Pao San Cemetery, Taiwan. Jet Star entertainment, Gao's company, confirmed his death through Weibo, a Chinese media.

Gao's death compelled the Chinese reality show productions to scrutinize their shows more as the shows were making contestants take part in physically strenuous challenges that were too tiring for the participants and they also started checking the safety standards of television productions more widely.

Gao had continuously been shooting for 17 hours at his collapse; director and actor Xu Zheng commented that the series' producers should be held responsible for the death. Zhejiang Television stated that they were sorry and deeply regretful for the sorrows that this incident has caused and are liable to take up the responsibility. Gao's body was taken to a funeral home on November 28, 2019, and brought to Taiwan on December 2, 2019.

Gao's funeral was held as a Buddhist ceremony in Taiwan on December 15, 2019. His remains are laid to rest at Chin Pao San. He was an active member on Instagram, having many followers. His demise at the age of 35 was shocking to the entertainment industry and his fans worldwide.
