After his parent's divorce, GoldLink moved to Bowie, Maryland, and later to Virginia.

He has been estranged from his father for eight years and does not have a healthy rapport with his mother. However, he started to make amends with his parents when he was 18 and pledged to improve his life.

He graduated from Hayfield Secondary School in Alexandria, Virginia. He started uploading his song videos on BandCamp and SoundCloud under his real name in 2013.
