Born in a farmhouse in Saskatchewan on March 31, 1928, Gordie is one of nine siblings in his family. During the Great Depression, Howe quit school to help his father with construction work. He left home at the age of 16 to pursue a career in hockey.
Gordie and Colleen got married on April 15, 1953. They met at a bowling alley when they were teenagers. Later, a middle school, football stadium, and a campground were named after Gordie and Colleen Howe to celebrate the couple and Howe's victories.
The four-time Stanley Cup winner had four children with Colleen. Mark Howe and Marty Howe, two of his sons were his teammates in the World Hockey Association Houston Aeros as well as in Hartford Whalers. Mark continued playing Hartford Whalers and Red Wings, holding the longest known NHL career in the history of hockey.
The Canadian professional player is best known for playing 26 seasons for the Detroit Red Wings. He also made it to the list of '100 Greatest NHL Players'.
Howe founded the Gordie Howe Cares, an initiative that aims to provide education and support to caregivers who live with people who have mental illnesses such as dementia and Alzheimer's.
Art Ross Trophy is presented to the player who leads the National Hockey League in scoring during the regular season. It is one of the most prestigious awards in the NHL and is a symbol of excellence for offensive players. Many of the game's greatest players have won the trophy, including Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Jaromir Jagr. Howe himself won six Art Ross Trophies.
