On May 3, 1946, Greg Gumbel was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Gumbel gained popularity because of his assignments under CBS Sports.
Before becoming a sports anchor, Gumbel attended Loras College and was on the college baseball team. Gumbel started his career as a sportscaster in 1973. As of 2022, he is a sportscaster recognized for covering the NFL( National Football League) and the NCAA (National College Athletic Association). He has worked with networks including NBC, CBS, MSG, and ESPN. In 2001, Gumbel was the first African-American to name a big sports championship or tournament with his play-by-play of the Super Bowl XXXV. Gumbel started his career when his brother Bryant Gumbel (the then TV sportscaster for KNBC) told him about an audition for sports announcer for NBC owned station WMAQ-TV, based in Chicago. At that time, Gumbel was trading hospital equipment and requirements in Detroit. He cleared the audition and worked for the station for seven years. He replaced Dennis Swanson, who became the ABC Sports' president.
Before rising to fame, Gumbel worked on networks such as ESPN, WFAN radio, and MSG. While working for ESPN, he was the anchor for the show SportsCentre and displayed play-by-play for the beginning of NBA matches. At MSG, Gumbel was the backup announcer for Marv Albert and did a cover for college basketball. In 1989, after MSG signed a deal to broadcast New York Yankee matches, Gymbel became the host for both pregame and postgame shows. Apart from this, he served as the radio host for WFAN radio.
In 1988, Gumbel's career at CBS Network began when he worked as a part-timer NFL announcer. Then for the 1990-1993 seasons, Gumbel became the host of the NFL today. He was the anchor of the CBS coverage of the Major League Baseball, College football, and Daytona 500. Gumbel became the prime-time host of the CBS broadcast of the Winter Olympics of 1994 and co-host of the weekly morning coverage of the Winter Olympics of 1992.
Gumbel left CBS following its loss for the NFL and Major League Baseball broadcasting deals. He joined NBC Sports and became the host of the NBC coverage of the Major League All-Star game of 1994. He hosted the daytime broadcast of the Summer Olympics of 1996, the World Championship of Figure Skating in 1995, and was the studio host of the NFL on NBC.
Gumbel left NFL and returned to CBS. During that time, CBS acquired the National Football League broadcast contract. As the lead announcer, he joined the broadcast department, and his fellow college friend Phil Simms was his sports commentator. Gumbel was the play-by-play lead announcer for CBS' coverage of the NFL from 1998-2003, naming Super Bowls XXXV and XXXVIII.
