Childhood And Education

Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin was born on January 21, 1869, in a beautiful city of Russia named Pokrovskoye, near the Tura River that flows from the famous Ural Mountains, Tobolsk, Governorate. He was born into the family of Efim Rasputin and Anna Rasputina. He was raised alongside his siblings Evdokya Rasputina, Maria Rasputina, Agrippina Rasputina, Glikeriya Rasputina, Tikhon Rasputina, Andrey Rasputina, and Feodosia Rasputina. Grigori's father, Efim, was a farmer who was also contented with his little farm. He was also a church elder in Russia. Grigori grew up knowing his father as a hardworking person who, aside from his farm, transports people from one place to another. Efim and Anna had seven more children, who all died.

Growing up as a child, Grigori could not get educated. He remained uneducated for quite a long time leading to his early adult life. Having stayed with his parents and siblings, Grigori embarked on a journey far away from his neighborhood. He traveled to a place called Abalak. Grigori finally met a young woman, a Siberian peasant, Praskovya Dubrivina. He courted her for a while, and they later married. He spent some time with her before traveling.

On the other hand, Praskovya stayed back in the village and remained faithful to him during his travels. Grigori and Praskovya Dubrivina had seven children. Unfortunately, four of their children died before adulthood, while the three children that survived were Varvara Rasputin, Maria Rasputin, and Dmitry Rasputin.

Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin decided to renew his mind in line with religion in 1897. While the reason for his sudden change in religious approach was unknown, many suggested that he escaped the punishment for his horse theft. Others believed he was only convinced to seek spiritual and religious guidance after meeting with the Virgin Mary in his dream. At this time of his life, Grigori was only 28 years old with an infant son. He was also expecting another baby with his wife at this time. This was a tough decision to make. One of the scholars, Douglas Smith, suggested that his decision to leave his family at this time could only result from a spiritual or emotional crisis. His visit to the famous St. Nicholas Monastry uniquely changed his life. It is interesting to know that it was at this monastery that he learned how to read and also write. Upon his return from the monastery, Grigori was entirely a changed man. He despised alcohol as he prayed much more than he used to. This was the beginning of a new phase of his life.
