Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani started his career as the commander of the Hamad Brigade. From there, he rose to the post of the Qatar army chief. In 1977, he was appointed as the Qatar defense minister and named the Heir Apparent by his father.

Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani had various other responsibilities as well. He also designed many social and economic policies as head of the Supreme Planning Council. From 1992 onwards, he took care of most of the day-to-day running of Qatar but his father, Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani retained control over the country's purse strings.

In 1995, after a bloodless coup organized with the support of his family, Sheikh Hamad was named the Emir of Qatar. Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was crowned in June 2000. His father lived in exile in Abu Dhabi and France for almost ten years before returning to Qatar.

During his reign, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani focused on exploiting Qatar’s oil fields to make it a major world power. By 2010, Qatar was producing 77 million tons of liquefied natural gas. With this Qatar has become the largest LNG producer in the world.

In 2005, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and the erstwhile prime minister of Qatar established the Qatar Investment Authority to manage the natural gas and oil surplus. Over the years, they have bought many businesses including the Harrods store in London, Printemps in Paris, the Paris Saint-Germain Football Club, properties like the London Olympic Village and Carlton Hotel in Cannes, and a stake in businesses like Porsche, Heathrow Airport, Barclays Bank, Miramax Films and the Universal Music Group.

Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was a key part of the 2006 Lebanon War ceasefire. In 2012, he proposed using Arab troops to ease the Syrian civil war. He even provided foreign troops with two military bases in Qatar.

His meeting with Israel's Foreign minister in 2007 is seen as the first meaningful attempt from a leader of the Persian Gulf countries to have diplomatic relations with Israel. However, this relationship was short-lived and severed in 2009 as a result of Israel's role in the Gaza war.

In 2005, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani set up the Qatar Museums Authority. The Museum of Islamic Art Doha built by them is the biggest contemporary art buyer in the world. Sheik Hamad also established the Doha Film Institute in 2009. Art, music, and films all flourished under his patronage.

Education and the upliftment of children were also prioritized. Along with his wife, Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser Al-Missned, he founded the Qatar Foundation in 1995. Many global academic institutions have since opened in Doha. This includes Carnegie Mellon University, Texas A&M University, and Northwestern University.

Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is known for his autocratic rule over Qatar. To control news in and out of Qatar, the Qatar government helped set up the Al Jazeera news network. The Emir is believed to be the real power behind it but he has denied the same. Al Jazeera has tried to become financially independent but after having failed to do so, it has been the recipient of many loans from the Emir.

As an accomplished sportsman, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani also promoted sports and athletics. Under his reign, the country performed well in a number of international competitions including the Asian and World Youth soccer championships and the 15th Asian Games. They also won an Olympic medal in athletics. In 2010, Qatar won a bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022.

In 2013, Sheikh Hamad handed over the reins of the country to his fourth son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is best known for making Qatar a major financial player not only in the middle east but around the world. By tapping into the country's oil reserves, the Emir Al Thani was able to put Qatar on the world map.

Charity Work

After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani donated $100 million towards relief. In 2012, AL Thani pledged $400 million to Hamas for humanitarian aid projects.

Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani also set up a non-profit organization called the Qatar Foundation to support programs of education, community development, and science and research.
