He was a prominent abolitionist and a significant participant in the Transcendentalist movement.

At the prompting of his mentor and friend, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau released his debut essays in the 1840s. 'Civil Disobedience', his renowned political treatise, was published in 1849. He attended Harvard University and studied classics, rhetoric, mathematics, philosophy, and science; however, he refused to pay the $5 graduation price.

His philosophic austerity, poetic sensibility, and devotion to practical detail are evident in his writing style, which mixes intimate observation of nature, symbolic meanings, incisive rhetoric, personal experience, and historical lore. Among his enduring contributions are his works on natural philosophy and history, in which he predicted the methodology and conclusions of ecology and environmental studies. Thoreau died of tuberculosis on May 6, 1862.
