They first named their group, Ermines, and later renamed it Coup De Villes, after participating in a talent show. They soon changed it to Premiers.
In 1995, Frankie Lyman, a 12-year-old, joined the group completing the group of five. That same year, a talent scout Richard Barrett along with the producer of Gama Records saw them singing and wanted them to sing under their label. George Goldner, the company's owner signed them in and changed the group's name to The Teenagers. The group produced two major hits 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love' and 'Please Be Mine' before Frankie Lyman, the lead vocalist, quit the group. The group broke up in 1961. Every artist in the group went solo. Herman Santiago has remained a solo artist ever since.
In 1986, a lawsuit in New York's Superior Court claiming the rights to the song 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love' brought an interesting discovery that Herman Santiago was in fact the writer of the song but he received no royalties as its author. This court decided to let Herman Santiago receive royalties for the song, making him a millionaire overnight. In 1996, this decision of the court was reversed when Frankie Lymon and music publisher Morris Levy received sole ownership of the song.
In 1993, the original members of The Teenagers, Frankie Lyman, Herman Santiago, Joe Negroni, Jimmy Merchant, and Sherman Garnes, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 2000 into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
