He won silver in the 1996 World Championships the following year. Kulik earned gold at the 1997 NHK Trophy. He later secured the position of the first runner-up Skate Canada International during the 1997-98 season with a silver medal. This secured his participation in the Champion Series Final (now known as the Grand Prix Final), where he won gold. He also won the Russian national championship but was unable to compete at the 1998 European Championships due to back difficulties. Kulik came first in both the short and long programs at the 1998 Olympics, winning the Olympic championship at the age of 20 years and 267 days, making him one of the youngest male figure skating Olympic winners.
Due to a persistent back problem, Kulik withdrew from the 1998 World Championships. He retired from competitive skating and has concentrated on on-stage performances. Kulik has performed with the Stars on Ice Tour, the 2009 Ice All-Stars, and the 2010 Festa On Ice. Ilia skated a duet with his wife, Ekaterina Gordeeva, in 1999.
