Felipe Coronel (aka Immortal Technique) was born in 1978 in Lima, Peru, in a military hospital. He is of Amerindian, Spanish, French, and African descent. In 1980, his family immigrated to Harlem, New York, because of the Peruvian Civil War. He had been arrested many times in his teenage years because his behavior was classified as childish and selfish.

Felipe Coronel was a student at Hunter College High School on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. His classmates also included Chris Haynes. He attended Pennsylvania State University but couldn't complete his tenure due to multiple issues. His father allowed him to stay in New York on the condition that he attends college classes. He got admission to Baruch College in political science for two semesters. He started selling his music written in jail on the streets of New York and also competed and won competitions in the underground hip hop scheme of the city, such as Braggin Rites and Rocksteady Anniversary. These music-based events led to Immortal Technique becoming a ferocious MC.

Felipe Coronel’s parents’ identities have been kept a secret by him. When Coronel enrolled at Baruch College, his father live with him only on the condition that he had to attend school.
