During the sinking of the RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912, John Borland Thayer III was a first-class passenger who survived the ship's sinking.
Jack Thayer was one among the few titanic survivors who survived jumping into the sea from the deck. He was 17 at the time. His recollections of the sinking were later written down and published privately.
Born into a wealthy Boston Brahmin family, Jack Thayer grew up in the Thayer family. His parents were John Borland Thayer II, a director and second vice president of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, while his mother was Philadelphia socialite Marian Thayer. Jack Thayer was among the 40 passengers who jumped into the sea and survived the sinking. The total number of people aboard the ship was 1,178. He formed a friendship with fellow passenger Milton Long during this experience.
Thayer attended the University Of Pennsylvania and was a part of the fraternity Saint Anthony Hall. Jack Thayer wedded Lois Buchanan Cassatt on December 15, 1917. The sons of Thayer served in the armed forces during World War II. Following his plane's downing in the 1943 world war in the Pacific theater, Edward Cassatt was listed as missing and presumed deceased. No remains were ever found. Thayer became extremely sad after hearing the news.
