James Hillier Blount was born to Jane Ann Farran and Colonel Charles Blount at an army hospital in the town of Tidsworth, Wiltshire, on February 22, 1974. He was the eldest of three children in the family. Blunt's father was a colonel in the British Army Air Corps and a cavalry officer before that. James Blunt hails from a long line of army officers dating back to the 10th century. His mother had a chalet company in the French town of Méribel.
Due to his father's frequent postings, Blunt moved quite a lot in his childhood and attended various schools. He attended Elstree School in Woolhampton, followed by the famous Harrow School in London, from where he graduated with A-levels in the subjects of physics, chemistry, and economics.
