James Shields started his career when The Tampa Bay Devil Rays selected James in the sixteenth round of the 2000 amateur baseball draft. He played as a pitcher, and he batted right and threw right. Shields endured significant shoulder surgery after pitching successfully in his debut season at the Class-A level in 2001, and he missed the entire 2002 season.

On May 31, 2006, he debuted in significant League Baseball against the Baltimore Orioles. He drew a no-decision after giving up five runs in five innings.

Shields won his first big league game on June 5, striking out six batters in six innings of work against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Shields became the first Devil Rays pitcher to begin his career with four consecutive wins on June 21, 2006. James had an underwhelming debut season with the Tampa Bay Rays. He concluded the season with a 6–8 record and a 4.84 ERA with a 4.84 ERA. The Tampa Bay Rays signed him to a 4-year, $11.25 million contract after the 2008 season, based on less than two complete seasons of major league baseball action with Tampa Bay.
