Born on January 30, 1957, in Detroit, Michigan, United States, Janiva Magness lost both her parents before she reached her mid-teen years. Forced to live on the streets initially, Magness was placed in a series of foster homes before she became pregnant at the age of 17. Due to her unstable living and financial conditions, Magness was forced to give up her child for adoption.

Her father's blues and country record collection was the only thing she had growing up and this shaped her style and approach as a musician. Furthermore, attending an Otis Rush concert in Minneapolis changed her outlook. According to her, she realized that Otis played as if his life depended on it, and this desperation and intensity were what she needed the most.

While studying for her engineering degree, Janiva Magness started working in a recording studio in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where she was coerced into doing backing singing.

While working as a backing singer, Janiva Magness worked with artists like Kid Ramos and R.L. Burnside. This led her to Phoenix, Arizona where she formed her own band called the Mojomatics. After being a local success, Magness decided to move back to Los Angeles in 1986.

After moving back, her debut effort was the album 'More Than Live', which was released in 1991, after which her independent blues album 'It Takes One To Know One' came out six years later in 1997. Later, in 1999, Janiva Magness starred in a stage production of 'It Ain't Nothing But the Blues,' performed at the David Geffen Theater in Westwood, Los Angeles.

In 2008, the famous Blues artist signed with Alligator Records for 'What Love Will Do' and her next hit 'The Devil Is An Angel Too' released in 2010, followed by a collection of her own songs 'Stronger For It' in 2012. The very next year, Janiva Magness was nominated in five categories for Blues Music Awards (BMA) and in 2014 she launched her own label Fathead Records, and released her first album of original tracks titled 'Original.' A co-writer in seven out of the eleven tracks, Magness went on to win her seventh BMA in 2015.

After signing the Blue Elan Records, home to Jack Tempchin, Gerry Buckley, and Rusty Baker, in 2015, Janiva Magness released 'Love Wins Again' in 2016. The album was a hit and stood at number 2 on iTunes Blues. Apart from that, Magness has also performed at various music festivals across the U.S. and Europe, including the 2007 and '08 Notodden Blues Festival and Byron Bay Bluesfest in 2016.
