Career And Professional Highlights

Best Known For…

Jennings Osborne was a philanthropist who put on magnificent Christmas light displays. Every year, the collection got more prominent, and by 1993, it was lit for 35 days throughout the Christmas season, from sunset until nearly midnight every day. Neighbors sued him in 1994 over a Christmas display that allegedly had more than 3 million lights. This case was taken to the Arkansas Supreme Court. As a result of the court decision, Jennings was obliged to shift the display to commercial places such as Disney World and Graceland.

He unsuccessfully challenged the ruling to the Arkansas Supreme Court. He subsequently filed an appeal with the United States Supreme Court, which declined to consider his case. Soon after, Mr. Osborne was approached by Disney executives who wanted to carry on his tradition. The company dispatched four 18-wheelers and 'Mickey Mouse' to his house to collect almost 2 million lights.

Residents in Central Arkansas also recognized him as the owner of the massive white mansion with the wall surrounding it on Cantrell Road in Little Rock, Arkansas—the one that glowed as brightly as Rudolph's nose every Christmas. He was also known as a hog-calling aficionado and for staging massive barbecues and fireworks shows. His name, together with the names of his wife and daughter, is cast at the feet of the brass eagle whose wings reach out at the Clinton Presidential Center's entrance.

Charity Work

As a philanthropist, Jennings Osborne hosted charity barbecues and sponsored fireworks displays throughout the state. He was well-known for his magnificent Christmas light displays at his Little Rock, Arkansas, home. He gave his displays to the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, in 1995, which resulted in the yearly Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights during the holiday season.
