James Patrick Page OBE, popularly known as Jimmy Page, is the founder and guitarist of the England-based rock band Led Zeppelin.
Jimmy Page is known for creating monolithic guitar riffs and his self-improvised style of playing the guitar as well as the multi-neck guitar. The greatest significance of his style was that he did not stick to one particular type of music, but rather explored various genres.
Starting off as a session guitarist in London, Page soon became a sought-after artist in Britain. Soon, he became a member of the musical group, The Yardbirds. But once they disbanded, he founded Led Zeppelin, comprising of vocalist Robert Plant, drummer John Bonham, and bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones along with himself.
Formed in 1968, Led Zeppelin is considered to be a progenitor of hard rock and heavy metal, as their music had a variety of tinges on it, including blues and folk. Within a year of their formation, Led Zeppelin produced their debut album, which was a massive success. This acclamation led them to release albums like, 'Led Zeppelin II,' 'Led Zeppelin III,' and 'Led Zeppelin IV.' In total, they released nine studio albums that made it to the US Billboard album chart, and of them, six were ranked number one. Amassing 111.5 million RIAA-certified units, Led Zeppelin is the second-best-selling band in America. In retrospect, Led Zeppelin can be termed as one of the best-selling music groups in the history of audio recording, and this can be largely credited to Jimmy Page, who was the band's producer. From various sources, it can be estimated the group has worldwide sales of over 200 or even 300 million albums.
Although short-lived, the rock band saw humongous success through their music and songs and was a revered influence in the music industry. While Jimmy Page's stardom reached newer heights, band member Robert Plant also created a legacy of his own. However, when the band's drummer, John Bonham died in 1980 in the Old Mill House owned by Page, they disbanded. Overcome with the grief of his friend's demise, Page refused to continue with music. Eventually, he went on to participate in several musical groups, like XYZ, the Firm, Coverdale-Page, the Honeydrippers, and Page and Plant, throughout the ’80s and ’90s. Also, he did live music performances in collaboration with his former band member, Robert Plant.
The musician, songwriter, and record producer, Jimmy Page has a net worth of around $180 million.
Given that Page has retired from music in a way, his source of income lies in the royalties. For instance, the royalties for Led Zeppelin's most famous song, 'Stairway to Heaven,' has had a royalty of $58.5 million since the summer of 2011.
Jimmy Page has a height of 5 ft 9 in (180 cm).
Born on January 9, 1944, Page is 78 years as of 2022.
Jimmy Page was born to his father James Patrick Page and his mother Patricia Elizabeth Gaffikin. His father was a personnel manager at a factory that made plastic coatings and his mother was a doctor's secretary.
Page was born in the London suburb of Heston, England. The family moved to Feltham and then to Epsom in Surrey, where he first came across a guitar at their house in Miles Road. Growing up, he started playing the guitar at 12 as he was inspired by Elvis Presley's song 'Baby Let's Play House.' Although he did take some lessons initially, he is mostly self-taught.
There, he attended Epsom County Pound Lane Primary School, and then Ewell County Secondary School, which he dropped to pursue music. Soon, he would perform with other artists although it was difficult for him to find such musicians. Finally, he was asked by Neil Christian to join his band, which toured extensively. Here, he mostly played the guitar for Neil's songs. Page, however, developed a serious illness and was unable to continue his tour. He made the decision to pause his career in music and focus on painting, enrolling at Sutton Art College in Surrey to pursue it. But, it was not that he completely let go of music.
Page dated the French model Charlotte Martin, with whom he has a daughter named Scarlet. Then, he was married to waitress and model Patricia Ecke and gave birth to a son, James Patrick Page. Later, he met Jimena Gómez-Paratcha in Brazil, and they have two children together, Ashen Josan and Zofia Jade, and he also adopted her oldest daughter Jana. Currently, Page has been in a relationship with Scarlett Sabet, an actress, and poet.
Page is best known for founding Led Zeppelin and being a celebrated guitarist, musician, songwriter, and producer.
Since 2000, Page has been seen in various guest performances where he collaborated with many artists, both live and in-studio recordings. However, his most remarkable appearance was when he participated in a one-off Led Zeppelin reunion in 2007, which later got released as a concert film, called Celebration Day, in 2012.
In an interview, Page revealed his idea of what he wanted Led Zeppelin to be since its birth. Taking many cues from The Yardbirds, he developed several points that he incorporated into Led Zeppelin. Additionally, he also added acoustic textures to the music that the band made. He revealed, quite honestly, that he wanted Led Zeppelin to be an amalgamation of blues, hard rock, and acoustic music topped with heavy choruses – a combination unheard of previously.
Page is involved in philanthropic work and is a celebrity supporter of the ABC Trust.
Page has been nominated for the Grammys six times and he won the Grammy awards twice for - Hard Rock Performance and Rock Instrumental Performance.
Also, he was awarded the Kerang! Hall of Fame Award, Kerang! Icon Award, NME Award for Best Guitarist, NME Award for Rock 'n Roll Soul, and the prestigious Kennedy Center Awards.
