Though Collins was born in Paddington, she was raised in Maida Vale, London, as the daughter of dance teacher Elsa Collins and talent agent Joseph William Collins. Her South African father was a devout Jew, while her British-born mother was an Anglican. Jackie Collins, a writer, and Bill Collins, a real estate agent, were her younger siblings. She attended the Francis Holland School, a London-based independent day school for females.

At the age of nine, Collins had her stage debut in Henrik Ibsen's play 'A Doll's House', and at the age of 17, she was recruited to the Rank Organisation-a British film studio.

That marriage also ended in 1983. Collins married former musician Peter Holm in Las Vegas on November 3, 1985; They divorced on August 25, 1987.

Collins played Crystal Hennessy-Vass, the ruthless CEO of the fictitious Solana Hotel Group, in the British comedy Benidorm from 2013 - 2017. In the E! drama series 'The Royals', she portrayed the Grand Duchess of Oxford, the mother of fictitious British Queen Helena (Elizabeth Hurley), from 2015 - 2018. Collins, along with Michael Caine, Stephen Fry, Ewan McGregor, Joanna Lumley, and Roger Moore, supported the children's fairytales app GivingTales in support of UNICEF in June 2015.

Joan made her cinematic debut in the 1951 picture 'Lady Godiva Rides' as a beauty pageant contestant. Again in the same year, she appeared in a minor role playing a Greek maid in 'The Woman's Angle'. In 'Judgment Deferred', she played a more prominent part as a Gangster's moll in early 1952.
