He was born in March, 1957. His full name is Joaquim António Portugal Baptista de Almeida.

He started performing in theater in the '80s, made his film debut in the action movie 'The Soldier' in 1982, and subsequently rose to fame for his portrayal of Andrea Bonanno in the Italian film 'Good Morning, Babylon' in 1987. With his performances as Félix Cortez in the 1994 thriller 'Clear And Present Danger' and Bucho in the 1995 action movie 'Desperado', he attained widespread recognition and built an international career.

Joaquim de Almeida rose to fame some years later for his roles as Hernan Reyes in the 2011 film 'Fast Five And Ramon Salazar' in the Fox thriller drama series 24, which aired between 2003 and 2004.

He is the sixth child of eight children and the son of two pharmacists. He began to exhibit signs of disinterest in the family business at an early age. Joaquim de Almeida left Portugal when he was 18 years old to continue his studies after spending two years taking the theatrical course at the Lisbon Conservatory.
