Joe Kenda was born on November 14, 1946, and as of 2021, he is 75 years old.
Joe Kenda was always fascinated by crime and mystery.
Kenda attended Greensburg Central Catholic High School. He graduated in 1964 with his high school degree. Later, he went on to attend the University of Pittsburgh and graduated with a B.A. in political science and a master’s degree from Ohio State University in international relations in 1970. He wanted to pursue his career in foreign service because he was not impressed with a classified briefing with the Central Intelligence Agency.
Joe Kenda gives the credit for inspiring him to become a police officer to his uncle Dan Morrissey.
Joe Kenda was born to William Kenda and Virginia Morrissey Kenda. His father served as an intelligence officer in the United States Army during World War II and after that, he started a trucking business. By the early ’90s, Joe, too, had started to feel a little wary of his job conditions, after coming across some really disturbing cases.
Joe Kenda married Mary Kathleen 'Kathy' Mohler. The couple has two children together- Dan, who is a retired United States Navy commander, and Kris, who is a retired United States Air Force major. The whole family appeared on the episodes 'Married To The Job' on February 6, 2019, and 'The End' on January 29, 2020, of the show ‘Homicide Hunter’.
Joe Kenda tied the knot with his high school sweetheart Mary Kathleen 'Kathy' Mohler on December 26, 1967. The couple has two children together- Dan and Kris- who are patriotic and provided services to their country. Kenda was a student at the University of Pittsburgh, he got married to Mary.
Joe Kenda was involved in 387 homicide cases and solved 356 out of those. His closure rate was pretty impressive, around 92%, in his career of 23 years.
The Pennsylvania-born detective first wanted to be a part of the Central Intelligence Agency and a part of the foreign service. However, the idea did not necessarily work out. Following this, he assisted his father in the trucking business for a brief period. Eventually, he moved to Colorado Springs in 1973, where he was able to work on a career in the police force, further pursuing his passion.
Joe Kenda worked in the Colorado Springs Police Department homicide unit from 1977-80 and 1984-96. He loved his work but his wife did not share a common interest and he did not receive any moral support from the family, possibly due to the dangers the work involved. In 1993, he transferred to Falcon, Colorado, and retired three years later.
He officially retired in September 1996. After he retired from the police force, Kenda missed his job so much that he went through a withdrawal phase. In 1998, he started his work as a school bus operator. He was employed there for 10 years and quit after he started his stint with TV.
In 2009, Patrick Bryant met Joe and discussed with him the planned TV crime series. Further, he decided to invite Joe to come up with a series focused on his work as a homicide detective.
Joe Kenda has been featured on the Investigation Discovery television show ‘Homicide Hunter’. He recounts his cases and how he solved them on the show. He also hosts the Discovery+ show ‘American Detective’.
While his job has been one of his favorite and passionate things to do, it is noted that Joe Kenda is also an avid reader.
