After graduating, he became the weather anchor for WMBD-TV in Peoria, Illinois. Then he worked for WISN-TV in Milwaukee, WBBM-TV, KETV in Omaha, and WLS-TV in Chicago.
In 1972, Coleman and his team at WLS-TV created the first chroma-key weather map. Then he became the original weathercaster of ABC's morning program 'Good Morning America', where he worked for seven years. David Hartman and Joan Lunden were the hosts of the show.
In 1981, Coleman convinced communications businessman Frank Batten to help him create The Weather Channel while being the president and CEO of TWC. After his engagement with TWC, Coleman worked as a weather anchor at WMAQ-TV in Chicago and WCBS-TV in New York. In 1994, he moved to Southern California to work for KUSI-TV in San Diego. Coleman suddenly left KUSI while vacationing in April 2014.
