He has previously had positions as a managing director at Lehman Brothers as an investment banker in the private sector. Following that, Kasich was re-elected eight more times. He served in his post from 1983-2001 in the House of Representatives.
He served on the House Armed Services Committee for 18 years throughout his time there. As one of the top Republicans in 1993, he put out a competing health care reform proposal to that of President Clinton. In 1994, when Republicans took back control of Congress, Kasich was appointed head of House Budget Committee. In this capacity, he presented a welfare reform measure that became law. He was the main designer of Balanced Budget Act, which was later passed in 1997. The next year, he supported Clinton's impeachment.
In 2009, John Kasich declared his intention to run for governor of Ohio. In the subsequent 2010 election, he ousted Democrat Ted Strickland. In 2014, he defeated Democrat Ed FitzGerald to win re-election. Until the conclusion of his tenure in 2018, he was in office.
In the 2000 presidential election, Kasich first sought the Republican candidacy. He withdrew from the race in the summer of 1999 as a result of insufficient financing. In 2016, he entered the run for president once again. He cast himself as a decent and knowledgeable contrast to Donald Trump. Ultimately, he withdrew from the contest since his campaign was failing.
John Kasich worked extensively in the private sector in addition to his duties in the government. He ran his own Fox News Channel program titled 'Heartland With John Kasich'. This show went on from 2001-2007. Additionally, he periodically took Bill O'Reilly's place as host of 'The O'Reilly Factor'. He has also had positions on the boards of other corporations, such as Norvax and Invacare. He held many roles, including managing director of Lehman Brothers' investment banking business. This is where he stayed until the company's insolvency in 2008.
John Kasich is seen as a semi-moderate Republican who opposes the extreme of the far-right while adhering to conservative principles. He has the same views as most members of the GOP. Additionally, he has backed a number of controversial international initiatives, including the US drone program and the Iraq War invasion.

Regarding immigration, he is in favor of giving illegal immigrants a simpler route to citizenship.
