He was the main designer of Balanced Budget Act, which was later passed in 1997. The next year, he supported Clinton's impeachment.
In 2009, John Kasich declared his intention to run for governor of Ohio. In the subsequent 2010 election, he ousted Democrat Ted Strickland. In 2014, he defeated Democrat Ed FitzGerald to win re-election. Until the conclusion of his tenure in 2018, he was in office.
In the 2000 presidential election, Kasich first sought the Republican candidacy. He withdrew from the race in the summer of 1999 as a result of insufficient financing.
