Marion Robert Morrison was born on May 26, 1907, in Winterset, Iowa, USA.

He was also known by his other moniker, Duke Morrison. His parents were Clyde Leonard Morrison and Mary Alberta Brown.

Wayne's paternal side has English and Irish heritage.

Wayne's family moved from Ohio to California in 1916, and his father worked as a pharmacist in Glendale. John Wayne went to Glendale Union High School, and he was remarkably good at both academics and sports. Wayne joined multiple activities while he was attending high school. He was part of the debating team, football team, president of Latin society, and gave a hand to the school's newspaper sports column.

Wayne then went to the University of Southern California and was a member of a couple of fraternities. Wayne was also part of the football team of the University of Southern California and played under Howard Jones, a prominent football coach. Wayne had to leave the university due to a bodysurfing accident which cut short his scholarship and athletic progress. John Wayne did apply to Army but was refused due to his low scores.

The legendary star of Hollywood's Golden Age first found a role as a prop boy, (due to favor to coach Jones). He was acquainted with the film director, John Ford, who gave him roles in a few movies including, 'Maker Of Men', 'Brown Of Harvard', 'Salute', and 'The Dropkick'. Wayne's first major role came when the film director, Raoul Walsh saw him shifting furniture as he worked as a prop boy.

The film, 'The Big Trail' came out in 1931, and was not successful commercially. He then acted in 'The Three Musketeers' (a serial film which is a type of a motion picture), 'Girls Demand Excitement', 'The Star Packer', 'Riders Of Destiny' in which he played the role of Singin' Sandy Saunders, and 'His Private Secretary'. Wayne's second major role came when he starred in 'Stagecoach', which was directed by John Ford. At the time of World War II, Wayne wanted to participate but was deferred because the Republic Studios had only John Wayne as their mainstream star.

Wayne briefly worked for the Army as well and was also issued an OSS Certificate of Service, his first color movie was 'Shepherd Of The Hills'. Wayne then starred in 'Reap The Wild Wind' with Paulette Goddard and Ray Milland. John Wayne then starred in his radio series which was called 'Three Sheets To The Wind'. Wayne's next film was, 'Sands Of Iwo Jima', for which he received an Academy Award nomination in the category of Best Actor.

Wayne then acted in 'The High And The Mighty', 'Flying Tigers', 'Flying Leathernecks', 'Jet Pilot', 'Island In The Sky', and 'The Wings Of Eagles'. Wayne with director Ford did multiple hit movies including, 'The Searchers' in which he portrayed the role of Ethan Edwards, 'The Quiet Man', 'She Wore A Yellow Ribbon', 'Rio Grande', and 'The Wings Of Eagles'. John Wayne other movies include 'The Barbarian And The Geisha' and then acted in Howard Hawks 'Rio Bravo', with other notable American actors. Wayne also appeared in the film, 'Red River' with the actor, Montgomery Clift.

In 1960, Wayne directed and produced the film, 'The Alamo', for which he received an Academy Award nomination in the category of Best Picture. Wayne did multiple Western films including, 'How The West Was Won', 'The Comancheros', 'North To Alaska', 'McLintock!' and 'Angel and the Badman'.

John Wayne then starred in 'In Harm's Way', 'The Sons Of Katie Elder', 'The War Wagon', 'El Dorado', 'Hellfighters', 'The Undefeated' and 'True Grit', for which the actor won an Academy Award in the category of Best Actor. During the 1970's, Wayne did several films, like 'Chisum', in which he portrayed the role of a cattle ranch owner, 'Rio Lobo', in which he portrays the role of a Colonel.

Wayne's next hit movie was 'Big Jake', the film was critically appraised and received positive reception. He then acted in 'The Cowboys' which was directed by Mark Rydell. His other movies were 'The Train Robbers', 'McQ', 'Brannigan', 'Rooster Cogburn'. The legendary American actor did his last film in 1976, 'The Shootist' which was directed by Don Siegel, the film was a critical and commercial success. The film was also nominated for multiple awards as well.

John Wayne was also politically active and supported certain political parties in America. He also contributed to creating, the Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals, and also served as the President of the said organization. Due to the status which Wayne earned and achieved, he was asked to join the political office multiple times but he declined the offers. He supported the campaigns of his close friend, late American president, Ronald Reagan. Wayne also supported the late American president, Richard Nixon as well. Wayne also supported the Panama Canal Treaty.

In 1964, the actor was diagnosed with lung cancer, and his two ribs and a lung was extracted. After the operation, he recovered and a few years later he was cancer-free. The actor loved reading books by Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Charles Dickens.
