Montes' deaf mother raised her with the help of Flory Hautea, her grandmother after Schnittka abandoned them when he was still a baby. Paolo and Patrick are her younger brothers. She views education as one of the keys to a happy life, and she intends to work hard for herself as well as for her family. Julia Montes has relations in Germany too. In 2011, she completed her high school studies at Blessed Hope Christian School with good grades. Montes started attending modeling and audition agencies when she was five years old. She also recalls the hard times she and her grandmother had, such as commuting to castings, rushing from school to ad shoots, and missing a lot of family time in the process of her being cast in advertisements for a chocolate snack, a milk brand, and a fast-food chain. She, however, claimed that she never competed with anyone and that she was only in the entertainment industry to showcase her talents and meet her needs.

Julia Montes and fellow actress Yam Concepcion completed a culinary course at the Center for Culinary Arts in Manila in June 2015. Julia was reunited with her birth father, Martin Schnittka, at Bellini's in Cubao, Quezon City, in December 2016. Julia Montes shared her interaction with her father on Instagram, thanking her German cousin Michelle Lloyd and CocoJul Bukayo followers for making it possible for her to meet him.

She started her acting career in modest roles as the daughter of actors Angelu De Leonand Robin Da Rosa in a number of GMA series, including 'Sana Ay Ikaw Na Nga' in 2001 and certain episodes of the now-defunct Philippine drama anthology Magpakailanman. Montes has appeared in guest parts on ABS-CBN dramas like 'Hiram' and 'Maalaala Mo Kaya' before obtaining a role in the comedy 'Goin' Bulilit' in 2005. In 2008, she also appeared in 'I Love Betty La Fea' and 'Ligaw Na Bulaklak,' two other television shows.
