She made a debut in her acting career in 1983 with the film 'Reuben, Reuben,' where McGillis played one of the central characters. The picture received widespread critical acclaim and a few Academy Award nominations despite its modest box office success.
In the 1984 television film 'Sweet Revenge,' she made her television debut. She also appeared in one episode of 'One Life to Live' in the same year. Her other television movies include 'Private Sessions', 'The Innkeepers', 'We Are What We Are', 'Tio Papi', 'Grand Street', 'Love Finds You' in Sugarcreek, and 'Ohio'.
In 1985, she had a major professional breakthrough when she starred as Rachel Lapp in the neo-noir criminal thriller film 'Witness'. The movie, which also starred Harrison Ford, was a critical and business triumph, getting eight Academy Award nominations and winning two of them.

Her subsequent acting project was a massive success. She played Charlie Blackwood (Charlotte 'Charlie' Blackwood) opposite Tom Cruise in the action-drama film 'Top Gun' (1986). The picture drew mixed reviews, but it was a huge commercial success and has since gained cult significance.
She made her Juilliard School debut in John Bletchley's production of William Congreve's 'Love for Love.' During the '80s, she appeared in a few off-Broadway and Broadway theatre performances in New York City.
Kelly McGillis was a featured performer with the acclaimed Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, DC, from the late '80s through the mid-2000s. In 2002, she made her Broadway debut at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, DC, playing the Duchess of Malfi in a production of John Webber's 'The Duchess of Malfi'.

Kelly McGillis was the victim of a home invasion. Kelly McGillis was injured and terrified in June 2016 when a lady stormed into her home in North Carolina and launched an unprovoked attack. Laurence Marie Dorn was arrested and held on a slew of charges, including second-degree burglary, misdemeanor larceny, misdemeanor stalking, assault and battery, and interfering with emergency communication, as a result of the police investigation. At trial, she was found guilty and convicted of misdemeanor breaking and entering.
McGillis has played a pivotal role in the Top Gun franchise's history, but she has mixed feelings about the planned sequel.
