She went to Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, California. Kelly moved to Los Angeles when she was a child because of her father's profession, and she spent the rest of her childhood there.
Growing up in Los Angeles, the heart of the American entertainment industry, she was drawn to the idea of becoming an actor from an early age. She graduated from high school in Los Angeles and migrated to Santa Maria to pursue professional acting training. She then attended the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts at Allan Hancock College.
She then relocated to New York City to pursue acting studies at the Juilliard School. During her time at Juilliard School, she performed in several productions and graduated in 1983. She began auditioning for television and film roles by that time.

The picture received widespread critical acclaim and a few Academy Award nominations despite its modest box office success.

Her performance in the film also earned a lot of praise from the critics, BAFTA Award nominations, and received a Golden Globe Award for it. Kelly consolidated her reputation as a promising young actress as a virtue of the film's popularity.
Her subsequent acting project was a massive success. She played Charlie Blackwood (Charlotte 'Charlie' Blackwood) opposite Tom Cruise in the action-drama film 'Top Gun' (1986). The picture drew mixed reviews, but it was a huge commercial success and has since gained cult significance.
She made her Juilliard School debut in John Bletchley's production of William Congreve's 'Love for Love.' During the '80s, she appeared in a few off-Broadway and Broadway theatre performances in New York City.
