He faced Fulgencio Suniga in his first competition for the vacant NABF Middleweight title. This fight was stopped in the ninth round by Zuniga's corner as he was cut over his right eye during a clash of heads.
Pavlik defeated Bronco McKart, the former WBO Light Middleweight champion, during the first defense of his NABF Middleweight title in 2006.
Pavlik knocked down Lenord Pierre, and he made it a dominant performance at Covelli Centre in 2006. This match was stopped by the referee.
During the final defense of the NABF Middleweight title in Anaheim, California, in 2007, he defeated Jose Luis Zertuche.
Pavlik won over Edison Miranda in a WBC Middleweight Title Eliminator bout in 2007. This helped him establish himself as the number one contender in the middleweight. This also helped Pavlik in getting an opportunity for the middleweight title. Larry Merchant, an HBO commentator, saw the fight as even in the sixth round. But eventually, during the seventh round, he knocked Talyor out. This win made Pavlik the new WBC, WBO, The Ring, and lineal middleweight champion. During this fight, Pavlik and his father, Mike Pavlik Sr., unknowingly forgot the paychecks at the hotel room they stayed in.
Pavlik was the 2007 Boxing Times Fighter of The Year, and America's Boxing Writers Association named this fight the Fight of the Year.
Pavlik's first title defense of the Middleweight Championship was against Gary Lockett, WBO's number one challenger, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City in 2008.
