Vernon Township High School and later earned a degree from Southern Illinois University in 1971. Due to a lack of funds, he began working at a young age to support his family and earn extra money. He even took up the job of an insurance salesman to help pay for his college education.

From 432nd place at the start of operations, the company related to long-distance communication eventually made its way to the top, becoming the fourth biggest long-distance carrier in America. Moreover, the company was the youngest to list on the New York Stock Exchange, a massive accomplishment. However, in 1998, he decided to sell this company to Teleglobe, another related company, making him a billionaire and clearing $3.5 billion.

Kenny Troutt also owns Prestonwood Farm (name later changed to WinStar Farm) in Kentucky, a horse breeding and racing farm that he purchased in 2000, fulfilling another one of his dreams that he saw as a child. Troutt made it one of the largest horse breeding and racing farms. Two of his horses also won the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.
