When he was 15, Kenny established his first group called Harbor Lites. The group made two singles in 1959 for a record company, Ivy Records. After that, Kenny Vance made a new group and auditioned for Mike Stroller and Jerry Leiber; later, the group was named Jay and the Americans.

The group Jay and the Americans released a total of 15 albums together. It was in 1962 that their song, 'She Cried' became their first hit. Many of their singles started getting wildly famous in the ’60s. They also started their own production and publishing company called JATA Enterprises. The gang released their last song in 1971 before breaking up in 1973. Kenny Vance has produced a song known as 'Hollywood Knights.'
In 1967, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the songwriting duo, came to sell their songs in the Brill Building. It was then that they ended up seeing Vance. Vance was impressed by them and offered to guide them. The duo used to arrange instruments for Jay and the Americans and also used to record with Kenny. Kenny continued to work with the duo until 1971. The duo was accepted as songwriters at the ABC Dunhill Records. There, the duo released their first album called 'Steely Dan.'
Kenny Vance also worked as a music supervisor for movies such as 'Animal House,' 'Eddie And The Cruisers,' and 'American Hot Wax.' The soundtrack of 'Animal House' got very popular, and its sale went off the charts selling more than a million copies. In 1977, Kenny Vance was the guest vocalist of 'Saturday Night Live.' He had also invited musicians to the show. Kenny Vance has also made an appearance in movies such as 'Billy Bathgate,' 'Stardust Memories,' 'Sweethearts,' and many more. Kenny Vance also appeared in an episode of the show, Great performances. This episode was titled 'Tales From The Hollywood Hills: A Table At Ciro's.'
