Larissa Kelly spent her childhood in Newton, Massachusetts. She graduated from Newton North High School, where she was an integral part of the science bowl team that participated at the national level.

Larissa received her undergraduate degree in 2002 from Princeton University and then went on to earn her doctorate in 2005 from the University of California, Berkeley. Her dissertation focused on the history of archeology in Mexico during the 19th century. She was a part of the quiz bowl teams at Princeton and Berkeley. She led her team to a national competition. She tied the knot with her fellow quiz bowl competitor, Jeff Hoppes, on August 3, 2002. During the All-Star Games Draft Show, she mentioned that her husband went to high school with Brad Rutter. Rutter was an All-Star Game player.

Kelly was victorious in her quarterfinal and semifinal matches in Las Vegas at the Jeopardy Tournament of Champions 2019. She held the lead after the first game with a score of $24,400 compared to Dan Pawson's score of $22,301 and Schroeder's score of $9,600. She was in the lead, taking her to Final Jeopardy in the last game. Sadly, she lost to Pawson because she gave the wrong answer to a clue that required her to identify the last British ruler to be born, George II of Great Britain, in a country other than the United Kingdom. She stood second in the tournament and got $100,000.

In 2014, Kelly made her way back to 'Jeopardy!' to compete in the Battle of the Decades competition. Unfortunately, she was out in her first round, but she did walk away with $5,000. In February of 2019, she also competed in the Jeopardy 'All-Star Games' as a member of 'Team Brad Rutter' alongside David Madden.
