Lee Haney is best known for his Mr. Olympia titles. The American bodybuilder won the bodybuilding competition for eight years in a row from 1984-1991. He holds the record for being the youngest American bodybuilder to hold the title.
Lee Haney was interested in physical fitness and bodybuilding from a very early age. He built a bench press and squat rack at home and when that wasn't enough, he went to the local gym for his workouts. He met his first coach, Danny Rogers when he was still a teenager. Under his guidance, Lee worked on properly building his physique and won the Mr. America Teen tournament in 1979.
In 1982, Lee Haney won the world championship for Amateur bodybuilders and earned a Pro card. He preferred to work on narrowly targeted muscle groups and followed a very strict diet and workout regimen. For Haney, this was more than just another sport. 1983 was a memorable year for Lee with him bagging a number of Grand Prix titles. He participated in the Mr. Olympia event but placed third.
Not satisfied with a third-place ranking, Lee worked even harder and won the title the following year. He would go on to repeat the show for the next seven years. With eight consecutive Olympia titles, he broke Arnold Schwarzenegger's record. Today, he shares this record with Ronnie Coleman. While he held the title, Lee found himself on the cover of over 20 bodybuilding magazines.
Along with his own training, Lee also helped other sportsmen train. An exercise called the Haney deadlift is credited to him. This exercise strengthens the posterior deltoid muscle. He worked with football players to improve their endurance as well as athletes. He worked on training the well-known boxer, Evander Holyfield. Many refer to him as the 'Trainer of Champions'.
After retiring as an IFBB professional bodybuilder, Haney started a brand to sell sports goods. He also started multiple gyms in Atlanta where he instructs and trains athletes. Lee also conducts bodybuilding seminars and comments on physical fitness tournaments. In 2018 he made an appearance in Fayette County, Georgia. He met and interacted with people at the Fayette County public library. He runs a television show on Trinity broadcasting network and ESPN and hosts a radio show to give people a peek into the fitness business.
From 1998-20o0, Lee Haney was part of the President's Council for sport and physical culture.
Lee Haney and his wife run a nonprofit organization called Haney's Harvest House. The organization mentors young men so that they can become positive influences in their communities. They also run programs on addiction and spiritual development. Other athletes also pitch in to host master classes.
Lee Haney has won many bodybuilding titles. In 1997, he was named Teen Mr. America. 1982 saw him win two titles at nationals and win the first position at the World Amateur Championship. 1983 saw him win two first-place prizes and place at five other championships.
