He was tied in the second position with footballer Dan Sandifer, a footballer who had established the record in 1948. Both the players lost to Dick' Night Train' Lane, who had 14 interceptions in 1952.
A Star Wars enthusiast, Hayes dubbed himself a true Jedi during the Super Bowl XVIII interviews. The football player retired in 1986 with 39 interceptions. He shared a similar score with Willie Brown, a Hall of Famer.
A member of the Raiders Organization, Hayes was a two-time Super Bowl champion cornerback who earned the 1980 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award and five Pro Bowl selections.
