In 1999, Louis was also bestowed with the Newbery Medal for his extraordinary contributions to American literature, especially to children.
Apart from these awards, he also won the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children's Book Award in 2000 and in 2008 the Anne V. Zarrow Award for the young readers' literature category.
