Reinhold's dad was a clergyman of the Evangelical Synod of North America. He decided to follow in his father's footsteps and become a pastor at a young age. In 1910, he studied at Elmhurst College, Illinois, and Eden Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1913. He finished his philosophical training at Yale Divinity School with a Bachelor of divinity degree in 1914 and a Master's of Arts in 1915.

Then in 1915, he was inducted into the Evangelical Synod's ministry.

Then, Andrew Bacevich named it 'The Irony Of American History', the leading book at any point composed of US foreign policy. At the same time, Arthur Schlesinger Jr. portrayed Niebuhr as 'The Most Influential American Theologian Of The Twentieth Century'.

From 1915-1928, Niebuhr was the pastor of Bethel Evangelical Church in Detroit. In 1928, he moved from Detroit to New York to work as a professor of practical theology at Union Theological Seminary, where Niebuhr eventually retired in 1960.

Niebuhr was a prominent figure in the Socialist Party of America's militant organization throughout the ’30s, despite his dislike for ardent Marxists. Martin Luther King, Vietnam War leaders, and Barack Obama were inspired by his ideological legacy.
