Oberst was already 6 ft 1 in (185 cm) tall when he was 12 years old, so was much taller than his friends from a young age. He started American football training while he was in high school.
He went to Aptos High School in Aptos, California, where he played football and competed in track and field. He received training for American football at Aptos High School. He played strong safety and tight end with the Sherman Oaks team of Notre Dame High School.
Robert Oberst also participated in a wrestling competition during that time, but decided that he wanted to pursue a career in American football, hoping to enter the NFL, so he gave up wrestling.

After completing college, Robert Oberst tried out for the National Football League (NFL). He did not make the cut, so got into security and bouncing at Esta Noche and El Rio nightclubs. Then, one of his friends introduced him to the world of Strongman competitions and helped him train for the events.
He had officially broken the amateur Log Press world record, after attending his first workout session. The official record at that time was 150 kg (330 lbs). With some more training, he grew up his strength and within four months, he received a Pro-Card.
He is known for saying that people shouldn't deadlift weights, while on Joe Rogan's podcast. He always recommends doing other exercises instead, such as cable lateral raises, dumbbell front raises, and face pulls.
Robert Oberst is a yearly competitor of the World's Strongest Man competition. He made it to the final of the 2013 and 2018 World's Strongest Man competitions. He managed to secure 9th place in 2013 and 8th place in 2018. Oberst stood in 8th position in the 2014 Arnold Strongman Classic competition. He has competed in 15 international competitions.
Robert Oberst represented the United States at the 2019 World's Strongest Man competition at Tachi Palace. He made it to the final in this competition.
Robert Oberst also competed in boxing, judo, and wrestling at various national level competitions during the '70s.

Along with this, he also secured ninth place at World's Strongest Man in 2013, second place at America's Strongest Man in 2013, fifth place at MAS-Wrestling World Cup in 2013, eighth place at Arnold Strongman Classic in 2014, second place at America's Strongest Man in 2014, third place at Arnold Strongman Classic Australia in 2015, sixth place at Giants Live North American Open in 2016 and 2017, and eighth place at World's Strongest Man in 2018.
His personal records include Log Lift: 465 lbs (211 kg) and Deadlift: 793 lbs (360 kg), recorded at 2015 Arnold Australia.
Oberst loves to work out at the gym. He is a very devoted father and often posts photos with his son to his Instagram account.
