Tom Bradley was born in Calvert, Texas, in 1917. His parents were poor sharecroppers. They moved to Arizona to pick cotton, and in 1924, they moved to Los Angeles, where his mother was a maid, and his father was a Santa Fe Railroad porter.

Tom Bradley attended Rosemont Elementary School and then Lafayette Junior High School. He studied at Polytechnic High School and was the first black student elected as the president of the boys league. Also, he was the first to be inducted into the Ephebians national honor society. He was the captain of the track team and all-city tackle for the football team at high school.

In 1937, Tom Bradley enrolled at UCLA on an athletic scholarship, where he completed his Bachelor of Arts and joined the fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi. He was the photographer for Jimmy Durante, a comedian, while at college. He also received a Juris Doctor from Southwestern Law School.

Tom Bradley was born to Lee Thomas and Crenner Bradley, poor sharecroppers. He had four siblings- Lawrence, Willa Mae, Ellis, and Howard.

Speaking of his family life, Tom Bradley was married to Ethel Arnold in 1941. They had two children together, Lorraine Bradley and Phyllis Bradley.

Tom Bradley was a Los Angeles City Council member from the 10th district from 1963-1973. He was the 38th Mayor of Los Angeles from July 1, 1973, to July 1, 1993. The 20 years Tom Bradley spent as a mayor of LA marked the longest tenure by any mayor in the history of LA, and he was also the second black mayor of a major US city when he was elected in 1973. He retired in 1993 because his ratings began dropping with the 1992 Los Angeles Riots.
