For his excellence in the game, he was awarded the college player of the year in 1973 and 1974. His name was also listed in the College Football Hall of fame in 1996 and in 2010 his name was inducted into the Black College Football Hall of Fame.
Walter Payton was married to Connie Payton and they have two children, Jarrett Payton and Britney Payton.
In 1975 Walter Payton started his professional career with Chicago Bears. Chicago Bears were not having good luck in their games after Gale Sayers got retired. After giving several unsuccessful attempts, Payton showed his best performance in the finals of the 1975 NFL Draft against the New Orleans Saints and scored 679 yards along with seven touchdowns.
In the 1976 National Football League season, he gave a remarkable performance scoring 13 touchdowns. In the 1977 Pro Bowl, he became the Pro Bowl MVP for his performance. In the Super Bowl XX 1985 against New England Patriots Payton brought the victory for Chicago Bears.
He holds multiple NFL Records like the Consecutive Regular Season Starts By A Running Back, Most Consecutive Seasons Leading The League In Rushing Attempts, Passing Touchdowns By A Non-Quarterback Since The Merger, and Games With 100 Or More Yards From Scrimmage Gained.
He had a very short career as this incredible personality was gone too soon at the age of only 45. He was fighting for a long time with a liver disease called primary Sclerosing Cholangitis. This disease led him to have bile duct cancer which became the reason for his death. He spent the last days of his life in Illinois.

In his entire football career, he has been awarded many honors and awards. The first one he received in 1993 was the title of Pro Football Hall Of Fame.

In 1977 he was titled NFL Most Valuable Player and in the same year, he again received NFL Offensive Player Of The Year and NLF Man Of The Year.
In 1977 Walter Payton received some other honorable titles like NFL Rushing Yards Leader and NFL Rushing Touchdowns Leader.
He was honored with the All-Pro title in the years 1978, 1979, and 1986.

In his childhood, Walter Payton had an interest in music. He used to play drums and in high school, he was also a part of his school band.
He was also interested in auto racing and learned how to drive stock cars. He was the co-owner of the car racing business Payton-Coyne Racing incorporated with Dale Coyne. Both had a collection of race cars sanctioned by IndyCar.
