Payton's elder brother Eddie was a part of the school's football team but he didn't want to compete with him and was more interested in giving his time to his school band.

After Payton's elder brother left the school, the head coach of the school football team asked him to join the team, to which he agreed on the condition of remaining in the school band as well. After entering the team, he immediately got famous as a running back and competed with neighboring schools.

Following in his brother's footsteps, he joined Jackson State University. His brother was a football player on the Jackson State University football team and he joined the same. Here he grew up with people like Robert Brazil, Jerom Barkum, and Jackie Slater.

For his excellence in the game, he was awarded the college player of the year in 1973 and 1974. His name was also listed in the College Football Hall of fame in 1996 and in 2010 his name was inducted into the Black College Football Hall of Fame.

In 1975 Walter Payton started his professional career with Chicago Bears. Chicago Bears were not having good luck in their games after Gale Sayers got retired. After giving several unsuccessful attempts, Payton showed his best performance in the finals of the 1975 NFL Draft against the New Orleans Saints and scored 679 yards along with seven touchdowns.

In the 1976 National Football League season, he gave a remarkable performance scoring 13 touchdowns. In the 1977 Pro Bowl, he became the Pro Bowl MVP for his performance. In the Super Bowl XX 1985 against New England Patriots Payton brought the victory for Chicago Bears.

He holds multiple NFL Records like the Consecutive Regular Season Starts By A Running Back, Most Consecutive Seasons Leading The League In Rushing Attempts, Passing Touchdowns By A Non-Quarterback Since The Merger, and Games With 100 Or More Yards From Scrimmage Gained.

He had a very short career as this incredible personality was gone too soon at the age of only 45. He was fighting for a long time with a liver disease called primary Sclerosing Cholangitis. This disease led him to have bile duct cancer which became the reason for his death. He spent the last days of his life in Illinois.
