On April 29, 1933, Willie Hugh Nelson was born in Abbott, Texas, to Myrle and Ira Doyle Nelson. He got his name from his cousin Mildred who named him Hugh after her brother, who died a little while before Willie was born.

In 1929, his parents relocated to Texas from Arkansas to look for employment. The grandfather of the musician was a blacksmith, and his father was a mechanic. Soon after his birth, his mother abandoned the family. After their father remarried and relocated, their grandparents raised Willie Nelson and his sister Bobbie.

When Willie Nelson was six years old, his grandfather gave him a guitar and taught him to play. His grandparents also taught him how to sing and assisted in the early stages of Willie Nelson and Bobbie Gentry’s musical careers. Willie and his sister Bobbie sang worship songs with their grandfather in the choir at their church. When Willie Nelson was nine years old, he began playing the guitar in Bohemian Polka’s neighborhood band. He also composed his first song at that age.

Willie Hugh Nelson sent the demos to a record label nearby, but he was not accepted. Later, Nelson performed in nightclubs and worked for various Texas radio stations. He ultimately landed in Portland, which is also his mother’s hometown. During this time, he worked as a disc jockey at numerous radio stations in Vancouver, Washington, and Portland, Oregon.

He collaborated with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson to form the supergroup, The Highwaymen.
