They were a group of marine mollusk animals which lived for around a hundred thousand years but then became extinct around 66 million years ago. They were known from the Jurassic Period, which was about 200 million years ago. Specimens of ammonites found ranged from less than a centimeter to 2 meters in diameter. Ammonites were also known as ‘serpent stones’ as it was believed that in Medieval Europe, they were like coiled serpents. In Chinese culture, ammonites shells are kept in homes as a good luck charm and to also ward off negative energies. In Hindu culture, the remnants of ammonites are known as ‘Shaligramas’ and are regarded as a symbolic representation of the divine.
