Copperhead snakes, or Agkistrodon controtrix, are a type of pit vipers, like rattlesnakes. They are mostly found in North America, mainly in New England, Texas, and the Northern Mexico area. They get their name from the fact that their head, which is copper-red. Copperheads are usually medium-sized snakes, and they range between 2-3 ft (60-91 cm) in length. They can also be uniquely identified from the hourglass markings they have on their whole body. Like most pit vipers, the venom of Copperhead is weak, and most of the time, the bite isn't fatal for humans. However, the copperhead bit more people in the US than any other species of snake. They are found mostly in swamps and in forest areas, but they are rarely found in cities or in an urban environment.
