It was coined with the name grizzly from the word grisly, which means gruesome or inspiring fear. They are huge animals with fur covering their body.


The female bear weighs around 286-396 lb (130-180 kg), while the male bears weigh around 396-793 lb (180-360 kg). Their average length is around 78 in.

The color of their fur is typically brown, however can vary in between the shades of blonde to black. Grizzly bears hibernate for around five to seven months in a year. During hibernation, the female gives birth and feeds the baby bear, while the rest of the hibernation period helps them gain strength.

When hibernating, they do not eat, which is why they eat a great amount of food before doing so. Their hibernation ends around April for male bears and May for female bears.
