Herefordshire

 With Kids

With vast open countryside and beautiful rolling hills, Herefordshire is one of the best places to visit in the UK if you're looking for a rural break. This English county, which borders Wales, is home to quaint market towns and villages, complete with plenty of incredible scenery.

Many of the county's major attractions can be found in the city of Hereford, which is the county town and largest urban area in the region. Herefordshire is known for its cattle and cider industries, and some of the finest beef and cider can be found here.

One of the best things to do in Hereford is to visit the Hereford Cathedral, which has parts dating back to the 11th century. In the Cathedral, you'll find the Mappa Mundi. This incredible historical artefact dates back to the year 1300 and is the largest medieval map of the world in existence.

Away from Hereford, there's more to discover in this grand Western county. The Herefordshire Beacon is one of the county's highest points and is home to the British Camp, the remains of an Iron Age settlement. A walk in these hills is worthwhile, as the views from the top of the beacon are stunning.

Herefordshire's Golden Valley is also a wonderful sight to behold. This historic landscape has been inhabited by humans for generations and is even home to a Neolithic man-made structure, Arthur's Stone, which dates back around 5,000 years.
