One of the Home Counties, Kent is found in south-east England and borders Greater London to the north-west, Surrey to the west, and East Sussex to the south-west. The county town is Maidstone, and 28% of the country forms part of two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty: the North Downs and The High Weald. It is home to Rochester Cathedral and Canterbury Cathedral, and if the weather is good, you can spot France from Folkestone and the White Cliffs of Dover.
Whatever your family’s priority, you’ll find plenty of things to do in Kent. With 26 castles and many National Trust sites, the county makes an ideal visit for history buffs. Your kids can visit Anne Boleyn’s childhood home of Hever Castle, or head to 12th Century Leeds Castle. Canterbury Cathedral is awe-inspiring, and don’t forget to visit the Historic Dockyard in Chatham for nautical-loving children.
If the sea is more for you, head to the Isle of Thanet for quaint seaside towns, and get exploring the rock pools or surfing the waves. Whitstable is the place to go for oysters, and for getting lost amongst the beach huts, or cycle through miles of traffic-free trails in Betteshanger Park.
Kids can also get stuck into the wild play area at Emmetts Garden, and the whole family can dine on classic fish and chips in Ramsgate. Check out the White Cliffs of Dover, or at least explore Botany Bay in Broadstairs for its phenomenal chalk cliffs, and maximise your beach day with swimming, surfing, and kayaking.
