Systemic Racism Explained

What to expect

Have you been inspired to educate yourself about systemic racism due to the Black Lives Matter movement? Do your kids have questions about racism? Join and watch this five-minute video, which takes a closer look at what systemic racism is as well as ways we can start to dismantle it. It’s not surprising that the protests taking place after the death of George Floyd will spark questions from some children about race and racism. Although these conversations may be difficult, it’s important not to shy away from them. These discussions are an opportunity for you and your child to learn something that could change the way the world works. From the school you attend in early childhood to predatory loans based on race, systemic racism can be seen in all aspects of life, and we all have a role to play in helping change things for the better.

Watching's video as a family is a good way to learn about systemic racism together, from the subtle microaggressions of everyday racism to the huge structural issues our society perpetuates. This clear and informative clip will discuss examples of systemic racism, including wealth, incarceration, representation and education. It will also make us aware of our own implicit biases. These may include prejudices or stereotypes you may hold that you are unaware of. This video also highlights the fact that structural racism is still occurring today and discusses how by supporting systematic changes, we can create more equal opportunities for everyone. It's never too early to talk to your kids about racism and it’s undeniably important to teach them about people outside their immediate family and celebrate differences and diversity.

Thankfully there are more and more resources now available to educate children and adults on race and racism. Why not check out The Atlantic's simple guide to talking to your kids about diversity and race or the Kids OT Help has a great video too.
