Nicknamed 'The Only Race Aviatrix in the World', Bessie Coleman was an iconic pilot born on 26 January 1892.

Bessie Coleman was the first African-American descent Black woman to fly. She was the first African-American woman to fly and hold an international pilot license in aviation as a civil aviator.

Bessie faced many obstacles in her life. The sad fact is, she was never allowed to enter an American aviation school as she was an African-American and as American aviation schools at the time refused to admit women of color. This didn't stop her, Coleman went on to Europe to learn aviation and finally received her international pilot's license. Once she had her license, Bessie Coleman became the first-ever African-American woman pilot and worked as a stunt pilot. She was otherwise also a famous explorer. After gaining experience as a stunt pilot, Coleman wanted to open a flying school and teach other black women to fly. She eventually opened one, thus fulfilling her lifelong dream.
