The two time Olympic gold medalist Mia Hamm is known as the best female soccer player in the world.
Born in Selma, Alabama, United States, Mia was introduced to the world of sports by her brother, Garett. She was picked for the U.S Soccer team at an impressive age of 15.
She helped secure four NCAA women's championships for her college before she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mia Hamm was the youngest team member of the U.S team to win the World Cup in the year 1991. It was she who said, "Take your victories, whatever they may be, cherish them, use them, but don't settle for them." And sticking to her words, she and her team went on to win the World Cup again in the year 1999. She won gold medals in the Olympics twice in the years 1996 and 2004, and she was also awarded World Player Of The Year twice by FIFA.
Mia believes that hard work will always bear fruit, as seen in her comments that, "the backbone of success is usually found in old-fashioned, basic concepts like hard work, determination, good planning, and perseverance". By the time she retired in the year 2004, she had scored 158 goals in competitions involving international teams. The highest by any male or female at that time. She was a true champion who lived by her words: "The vision of a champion is bent over, drenched in sweat, at the point of exhaustion when nobody else is looking"!
