You've picked the crib, got some baby sleepsuits and read up on creating the best sleeping routine - but is a baby night light on the list for your nursery?
It's one of those things you might not think about, but you'll thank us if you invest in a baby night light. When you're up in the middle of the night for those cosy feeds, or you're trying to get your baby to self soothe themselves to dreamland, night lights are both practical for you and calming for your baby.
Many of them even come with calming sounds and noises, so check out our list and find out which of these nightlights is best for you.
We love this night light because you can change the settings to suit your baby. Anyone who has a regular 'adult' Lumie product will know how smooth it is when you dim the lights, so you can have it at the level you want for bedtime stories or night time feeding. You can even have a sunset so it gradually fades to either a low light or complete darkness when it's time for your child to go to sleep. And if you do decide to have it on during the night, you can rest assured that it emits very little blue light - which is what can stimulate both adults and children to wake up. All of this makes it one of the best nightlights in our opinion.
If you're searching for plug-in nightlights without bells and whistles, then this nightlight from Lindam should do the trick, even though it's not the most exciting to look at. You just need to plug it in; the sensor will know when it's dark and the light comes on automatically. The light level is bright enough for sleepy feedings but low enough for your baby to stay asleep.
Ewan is well known amongst parents these days, and he's had an upgrade. As well as the rainfall, vacuum cleaner, harp melody and womb white noise recordings to help your baby sleep (all with a resting heartbeat in the background), a calming shush voice has now been added to this popular sleep aid. The sounds are activated via Ewan's soft feet, so your child can even put them on themselves if they want to. The deluxe model's best new addition for parents, however, is that it's machine washable so you know Ewan won't lose his looks.
Just when you've got your baby sleeping through the night, there may be another challenge on the horizon: getting an excitable toddler to go to sleep. The Gro Clock is the ultimate night light for toddlers and that's because, for many parents, it does work. Once they're old enough to enjoy bedtime stories and understand their meaning, you can read the accompanying book to help explain why sleeping through the night is the way to go, and all enjoy a decent night's sleep.
This is a lovely baby musical night light. Babies will love to snuggle it in their cot, and the soothing ocean sounds should help them sleep. The battery life is also very good, unlike some other nightlights, so we think this is a bargain for the price and ideal for babies.
If you're looking for a projector light for babies that will help them sleep, this nightlight should fit the bill. It comes with five different sounds, three volume controls and the choice of three colours (red, green or blue) for the star and moon lights, so you can personalise the best settings for your baby. You can also select whether it shuts off after 15, 30 or 45 minutes (by which point they've hopefully drifted off to sleep).
This Gro Egg update is now more of a nightlight thanks to the addition of adjustable lighting. You can now get the perfect amount of light for those nappy changes in the middle of the night and to reassure children who are afraid of the dark. As with the first model, it's perfect for quickly checking how warm the room is to assess what bedding is needed; as well as displaying the temperature, the light also changes colour to show whether it is too hot, too cold or just right.
This is probably the most surprising of all the kids' nightlights on the market, but hear us out. It is common for babies to get attached to their bottle, so when the time comes to move on to a cup you can keep their drink in the room with them without any spillage. The nightlight is light sensitive so doesn't need to be turned on and off, if it's dark, it'll come on, but you can manually switch it off if you'd rather just use it as a cup. Just remember to take the battery pack out before washing it!
If you're looking at night lights with stars, then why not kill two birds with one stone and get a high-quality baby monitor as well? The sound quality of the audio is clear (although the LED lights also indicate any noise coming from the nursery, if you want the volume off) and it even comes with 18 lullabies. If you do have to nip in to soothe your baby, the night light for nursery comes with adjustable lighting so you can see more when you need to. There's also a talkback function so you can even soothe or chat to your baby via the remote control of the parent unit.
