A birthing ball (or pregnancy ball) is a large, non-slip, inflated ball made from an anti-burst material that's much like an exercise ball, though bigger in size; a pregnancy gym ball, if you will.

From pelvic floor toners to pregnancy pillows, there are all sorts of birthing products on the market that claim to make pregnancy and labour easier and more comfortable, and some, naturally, are more effective than others.  Birthing balls actually work.

They can be sat on throughout pregnancy to reduce pain and discomfort, and work by promoting good posture and helping to alleviate back, pelvic or abdominal pain, as well as ease stress and anxiety. During labour, they can help relieve labour pain, as well as that of contractions. Some even say it can make the first stage of labour shorter; they certainly help support a number of different positions that can make labour much less uncomfortable for the women who choose to use them. Whilst some anecdotal evidence might seem to suggest the efficacy of using a birthing ball to induce labour, there is no scientific evidence to support this. But sitting on a birthing ball with your legs apart can help prepare the body for labour by opening the pelvis, increasing blood flow and promoting cervical dilation.

There's no doubt that its an immensely helpful pregnancy and birthing aid, whether it be for sitting and distributing the body's weight, exercising or providing bodily support. The best ways to use one include sitting upright with the legs wide and the toes pointing outward and circling the hips, wrapping the arms around the ball whilst kneeling and rocking the raised pelvis from side to side, or resting your birth ball on the bed and leaning over it for support.

It's important to make sure you do your research when purchasing a pregnancy ball, as there are a number of factors to consider. You want either a 65cm ball or a 75cm ball (55cm if you're shorter than 5'4"); you want to be able to sit comfortably on it with your feet flat to the ground. You also ideally want to get one with a non-slip finish - the last thing you want during labour is your birthing ball slipping away from you!

Luckily we've done most of it for you. We've gathered together a range of the best birthing balls on the market so that you can make an informed decision.

Take a look at our list and choose the best birth ball for you.

Kidadl's Top Pick

Whilst all the birthing balls on our list come highly recommended, this one is our top pick. It's versatile, affordable and super hardwearing - a real winner!

1. Trideer Exercise Ball

Trideer Exercise Ball.

This Trideer exercise ball had to be our top pick. For starters, it's super heavy duty, with robust anti-burst properties that are sure to hold up against anything pregnancy or labour can throw at it. It's also amazingly good value. At just £14.99 for a 68-75cm ball, you'll hardly have to shell out anything for a really good quality product. The material from which it's made is hypoallergenic, BPA-free and eco-friendly (so you don't have to feel guilty about making an environmentally-harmful purchase in your quest for comfort) and it's really easy to inflate; just attach the foot pump included and you're good to go. There are a good range of sizes and colours and it's also anti-slip. 2. BABYGO Birthing Ball

BABYGO Birthing Ball.

It's hypoallergenic and made from a phthalate-free, latex-free PVC that's specifically baby-friendly. Five times stronger than standard exercise balls it's designed to take the weight of a pregnant woman, with anti-burst properties that prevent it popping suddenly and sending you crashing to the floor. It comes in a fun turquoise colour and 65cm and 75cm sizes, and arrives with all the necessary equipment to get it pumped up and ready to use.  Best of all for expecting mums, it comes with a specialised BABYGO pregnancy exercise book with over 30 exercises specifically dedicated to each trimester and plenty of helpful advice.

Best Birthing Ball For Families On A Budget

3. Opti Purple Gym Ball

Opti Purple Gym Ball.

This Opti Argos birthing ball is by far the cheapest we could find - at under £8 it's such a steal! It doesn't come with all the bells and whistles that some of its competitors feature, but if you're looking for a great, no frills product that does the job, this is it. Perfect for sitting on, exercising and relieving lower back pain, this gym ball works perfectly well as a birth ball. It's anti-slip, so you won't have it rolling away from you, and comes with a pump, so you can get using it immediately. You don't get the range in sizes that you do with other balls, but 65cm is the size most women need anyway. We like the fun purple colour, though the lack of colour choices may be a disadvantage those looking for something to fit with their decor. At this price, you can't have everything!

Main Features

  • Price: £7.99
  • Size: 65cm (Max user weight 19st 10lb)
  • Anti-burst
  • Includes inflation pump and accessories

It comes in a good range of sizes so there's one to suit women of all heights and a lovely range of colours, too; we particularly love the pale gold.

Best For Colour Range

6. Core Balance Pregnancy And Exercise Ball

Core Balance Pregnancy And Exercise Ball.

If colour is an important factor to you when choosing your pregnancy ball, the Core Balance birth ball range should be your go-to. There are five pretty shades to choose from - black, grey, pink, purple and teal - so you're bound to find one that fits your home colour scheme, and each has a pleasant metallic sheen to it. Looks aside, it's got a lot else going for it, too; made from a material that's both anti-burst and anti-slip it can hold a decent amount of weight (250kg), comes in a good range of sizes (55cm, 65cm, 75cm and 85cm) and, with prices starting at £11.99, it will hardly break the bank. Inflation accessories are included, though there are a couple of things to note: the material of the ball can react with some wood surfaces and the pump is not the most powerful. Overall, though, a good buy.

It's able to hold an impressive 2000lbs of weight and, if punctured, will deflate slowly rather than popping suddenly. It comes with a foot pump, measuring tape and plug tools so you can make sure you've got it perfectly inflated before you get going, though it's worth noting that the pump is not super powerful.

Main Features

  • Price: £24.99
