It is entirely up to you as to whether or not you want a nursing cover (or breastfeeding cover, either name works), if you opt to breastfeed in public, however, you may feel more comfortable and that you have been afforded a greater sense of privacy if you do wear a breastfeeding cover.
Nursing covers also have a real practical use - they help to shield your baby from the elements, be that wind, rain, or sun, and are particularly helpful in the early days when both you and your little one are trying to navigate the most comfortable position for both of you. Equally, once your baby is a bit bigger and more familiar with the process, nursing covers can help them feed without getting too distracted by their surroundings.
There are a number of things to look for in a breastfeeding cover up. Unlike a cot or car seat, there aren't any official guidelines for nursing covers, so it's a personal choice and totally up to you. That said, there are a few key things that we'd recommend looking for in all nursing covers.
Firstly, it's key that your nursing cover is easy to use and adjustable - because there's no point adding extra stress caused by fumbling with buttons when your little one is complaining of hunger. They should provide a level of coverage with which you are comfortable. Ideally, the fabric would be machine washable - again, to make your life as a new parent easier - and soft to the touch. Breathability is also a key component of any nursing cover, so that both you and your baby stay comfortable.
Breastfeeding covers come in different styles, all of which are slightly different, so it's entirely your call on what suits you best as a cover when breastfeeding. These are the three main styles:
- Apron nursing covers slip over your neck, draping over your chest and stomach, like an apron but without the waist tie. They're a less subtle nursing cover than other options such as a nursing shawl or nursing scarf.
- Wearable covers include nursing shawls, scarves, or ponchos. A nursing scarf can be worn around your neck when you're not nursing, making it a more discrete option; a nursing poncho covers both your front and back, and is therefore great for chillier feeds; a nursing shawl is a piece of fabric that you drape over yourself. You can DIY a nursing cover in this style with a piece of muslin cloth, too, in case you find yourself out and about without your usual nursing cover.
- Convertible covers tend to be wide loops of fabric that are usable as a nursing cover but also neatly doubles up as a car seat cover, or a high chair and shopping cart cover, as well as a blanket. These are therefore the most multifunctional option.
Be aware, too, that if you are choosing to breastfeed your baby, it is against the law to discriminate breastfeeding in the UK, so you can rest assured that you have the right to do it wherever and whenever your little one needs. But it's also important that you are comfortable and confident, so choosing places where you feel happier is key, particularly at the start of the breastfeeding period, when everything is new and you're a bit less confident.
We at Kidadl are passionate about ensuring you have the best nursing experience possible, so we've also put together a list of the best nursing bras available for you to peruse. We've also researched the best nipple creams too, to keep you as happy and healthy as possible.
Kidadl's Top Pick
1. Milkscarf by Mamamoosh - Mamamoosh
This Mamamoosh breastfeeding scarf is a gold award-winning product for many reasons, which makes it one of the best covers that we've seen. Firstly, it's bigger than most nursing covers, providing full coverage for you at a time when you need it, even for the wriggliest baby. Plus, this means it's ideal for covering your baby should they need to sleep, and its draped style ensures that you don't have to expose your stomach whilst feeding, which is particularly welcome in the post-birth months. It's easy to put on and off whilst you're still holding your baby - just pop the neck strap over your head for no-fuss privacy as and when you need it - or you can just wear it as a regular scarf, freeing up much-needed space in your change bag. It converts from a scarf to a nursing cover in seconds and is made of soft, light jersey fabric so that it's breathable for both you and your baby, and suitable all year round. The neckline is semi-rigid too, meaning that you can look down and maintain eye contact with your little one easily and without having to faff at the neckline. Plus, it comes in various colours and is one size fits all, so you can choose according to the option that best suits your wardrobe.

Best Nursing Cover For Families On A Budget
2. Palm & Pond Breastfeeding Cover With Boning - Daisy Baby
Super bright for extra cheer, this nursing cover is of the apron variety, meaning the material doesn't cover the back of the body, and there's a neck strap to place over your head when in use. It's lightweight, easy to carry, machine washable, and folds down to fit easily in a changing bag (it comes in a bag, too). It's also 100% cotton and the boning in the neckline means that it's both breathable and you can easily look down to engage your baby in eye contact.
- Price: £6.95
Best Nursing Muslin
3. Extra Large Elephant Print Muslin - Jojo Maman Bebe
If you're looking for something that's more in the style of a breastfeeding blanket and has less structure compared to the apron nursing covers, this elephant print muslin is the one for you. Use as a breastfeeding cover, or as a burping cloth, pram cover, a swaddle, or for wiping up spills. It's multifunctional, and will work as hard as you need it to - plus the three colour options of the design get bonus points for cuteness.
- Price: £10
Best Breastfeeding Shawl
4. Breastfeeding Cover Maternity Shawl - Seraphine
We love a bamboo product for several reasons, namely its hypoallergenic and antibacterial qualities, as well as the fact it's super soft. This nursing cover is one of the more stylish offerings - as per the brand Seraphine's standard - fusing function with fashion. Choose to wear it stylishly draped and secure the fabric with shoulder poppers, or wrap it, wear it as a scarf - whatever suits your needs, as this can be worn in multiple ways. The bamboo blend also works to wick moisture away, ensuring the comfort of both yourself and your baby. Perfect.

Best Cosy Maternity and Nursing Cardigan
5. Marl Grey Drape Maternity & Nursing Cardigan - Jojo Maman Bebe
If winter's chill is pushing in (or you just want an extra cosy layer to throw on), this cardigan will keep you looking elegant whilst ensuring you're warm and comfortable. It's designed to fit both during pregnancy and post-birth too, meaning that it has longevity as a piece and is, therefore, a worthwhile investment. The belt makes it easier to adjust the cardigan to your changing shape, but it can also be worn open in a waterfall style should you prefer. There are also buttons at the shoulders for extra cosiness. It's not often that you come across a chunky knit piece that also doubles up as a nursing cover, so this piece is a winner.
- Price: £39
Best Luxury Nursing Shawl Wrap
6. Two-Tone Luxury Maternity & Nursing Shawl Wrap - Seraphine
This is another one of Seraphine's great offerings for products that are super cosy but still functional and stylish. The ultra-soft knit has plenty of stretch, and the slim fit cuff sleeves keep your arms warm even as the shawl drapes over your shoulders. We love the fact it's reversible, too, fusing a sandy shade with deeper charcoal - you could wear it out on an evening post-pregnancy without a hitch - and, of course, it works fabulously as a nursing cover.
- Price: £65
Best Muslin Nursing Scarf
7. Premium Muslin Nursing Scarf - Bebe Au Lait
Bebe Au Lait is a California-based brand with a devoted following, as they make stylish, high-quality products for both mums and babies. The pieces are always made from exceptional fabrics and feature beautiful prints that stand the test of time, so are perfect for the modern parent. This scarf is no different. It's made of 100% premium cotton muslin, so is ultra breathable but also really easy to care for - just pop it in the washing machine. The scarf provides full coverage for both you and your baby and is really lightweight. It also gets bonus points because we'd happily wear this after pregnancy, so it's a fabulous multi-use addition to any wardrobe.

Best Nursing Cover Made Of Premium Cotton
8. Nursing Cover Premium Cotton - Bebe Au Lait
This is another of the iconic brand's best nursing products, thanks to its patented Rigiflex neckline. This is great for several reasons: it provides ventilation for both mum and baby, ensuring both breathability and that you can hold eye contact whilst feeding, thereby strengthening the bond between you and your little one. Plus, you can check that your little one is properly latched. The nursing cover is secure and adjustable, with a neck strap that holds everything in place ensuring privacy so that you can be confident in your feed. There are also two internal terry cloth pockets for clean-ups and storage, which we think identifies this as one of the best nursing covers for practicality. It's machine washable, and the etched diamonds are a sophisticated, classic print.

Best Versatile Nursing Cardigan
9. Breton Stripe 4-in-1 Maternity & Nursing Cardigan - Jojo Maman Bebe
This is another product designed for both the maternity and nursing period, so is a great multi-tasker and guaranteed to work hard in your wardrobe. The Breton stripe is a classic, timeless print that's great for dressing up or down, and the cardigan is really cosy thanks to the knitted cotton blend. It can be worn in multiple ways for either a relaxed or sleek look: there is a button at the shoulder for the latter, or if you prefer a draped silhouette, a lower buttonhole that allows the collar to drape elegantly. These features make it ideal for discrete breastfeeding, too, so it's an unusual nursing cover option that nonetheless works brilliantly (the fact it's a bestselling item speaks to this).
- Price: £39
Best Nursing Poncho
10. Nursing Poncho - Nuobesty
The modal fabric that this nursing cover is made of is a real winner. It's exceptionally soft but also stretchy, making it easy to pull on and off. It's multifunctional, as it can be used as a baby pushchair cover, and the diagonal stripes are flattering, whilst the colour is minimalist and sleek, making it easily wearable. Nursing ponchos are great because they're such an easy nursing cover to use, making feeding simpler for both you and your baby - plus they're suitable for pumping whilst still maintaining full privacy for you.

Best Nursing Cover With Added Extras
11. Nursing Cover For Breastfeeding - Dodo Baby
This nursing cover is a great all-rounder, as it is incredibly stretchy and will therefore easily double up (or even quadruple up) as a car seat cover, a buggy cover, or a high chair liner. The fabric is breathable and we love the pretty design. The real winner for this cover is how many extras it comes with: there's a storage pouch, dummy clips, and a dummy case too, all at a price that's an absolute steal.
- Price: £9.95
Best Multifunctional Nursing Cover
12. Blue and White Striped Multi-Use Cover - Cover Me
The nautical stripes of this nursing cover are particularly appealing, as is its multipurpose quality. Lightweight and breathable thanks to the soft jersey material, this is great as a nursing cover and as a car seat cover, as well as a burping cloth, shopping trolley cover, high chair cover, sling, or changing mat. Plus, if the stripes aren't for you, there are plenty of other nursing covers of different designs available from Cover Me.

Best Nursing Cover Made Of Linen
13. Linen Nursing Cover - Etsy
If neither muslin nor cotton are quite your thing, then consider linen, which is super lightweight and very breathable, as well as tending towards a more sustainable fabric. This nursing cover is five-star rated and comes in multiple colours, so you're bound to find a product that suits you. It's one size fits all, but the neck tie is adjustable thanks to the stud poppers, so you can make it fit you as you need, and this nursing cover doubles up nicely as a lightweight linen blanket, too - perfect for the summer and hotter days. It's also machine washable, so is super easy to care for.
