In the midst of a pandemic, most of us have become well-practised in the art of hand sanitation.

Though the summer has offered a little respite, the coronavirus is far from gone, and it goes without saying that it is still incredibly important to keep ourselves safe, clean and free of germs. This starts first and foremost with cleaning our hands.

A hand sanitiser is a liquid, gel or foam that can be applied to dry hands to kill germs. A good one will contain ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol, which work to kill harmful bacteria and viruses that have been transferred to our hands, and a solution should contain at least 60% alcohol to be effective. Having said this, it isn't always practical to use an alcoholic product on children; they can be damaging to young, sensitive skin and are also harmful when ingested (a possibility with young children who are always putting their hands in their mouths). We have therefore included a range of products on our list so you can pick the best one for your family.

Though leading experts agree that the best way to stay clean and safe is to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, this isn't always practical. Out and about, it isn't possible to constantly be dashing into toilets to use the sink. A good rinse-free antibacterial hand gel is therefore the most effective and convenient way to rid our hands of germs between washes. Though they're not 100% effective (they take 20 to 30 seconds to kill viruses and some will survive), they're better than nothing and are a great thing to keep in our bags along with our face masks for staying safe on-the-go.

Read on to discover our pick of the best hand sanitisers for families and find which one suits you best.
