This day is observed in different ways by people all around the world, particularly in Africa.
It is majorly celebrated by Africans, and those of African diaspora.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared May 5 as African World Heritage Day in November 2015.
UNESCO started this day to honor Africa's cultural and natural heritage.
On May 5, African World Heritage Day, people throughout the world, particularly Africans and people of African origin, will have the chance to appreciate Africa's diverse and distinctive cultural and natural heritage.
UNESCO's goal for this international day is to raise worldwide awareness of African heritage, with a specific emphasis on youth, and to mobilize more collaboration for its preservation at the local, regional, and global levels.
Mobilizing local communities, particularly young people, behind heritage preservation, and including them in programs that respect their cultural identity and natural environment, is one of the most effective means of opening up opportunities for the future and growth.
Appreciating arts from Africa is also a great activity to know more about the culture of the country.
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the fifth edition of the African World Heritage Youth Forum was conducted online from April 29 to May 5, 2021, with the topic 'Youth, Entrepreneurship, and Heritage Sustainability: Building Africa We Want.'
UNESCO organized a live concert on Instagram where this day was observed with performances by musicians from around the continent to share Africa's resilience with the rest of the world and honor its remarkable culture in 2021.
African World Heritage Day is celebrated across the world every year in all pomp and glory to know and highlight African history and heritage.
It helps in raising awareness and securing African heritage because it is one of the underrated ones. On this day, African heritage comes into the spotlight and makes people realize how rich and cultural it is.
Africa's indigenous traditions, Islamic religious and cultural inputs, and items of Western religious and secular civilization are the three heritages of Africa.
On May 5, African Globe Legacy Day, people all over the world, notably Africans and people of African descent, will have the opportunity to celebrate Africa's vast and distinct cultural and natural heritage. Unfortunately, while African history is underrepresented on the World Heritage List (around 12% of all sites), it is overrepresented on the World Heritage in Danger List (39% of all sites in danger).
People celebrate this day majorly to protect the African heritage because it is one of the most underrated ones.
